E Type in the Family
This is a 1968 Jaguar E Type open-two-seater. I encountered it, with its owner Bill, on my way home from work. Bill was kind enough to share his car’s story.
He inherited it from his father, who bought it in the 1980’s. It originally came in light blue. But his father had it painted this metallic sage color. His father took it on at least one long trip (to Las Vegas). Now, they are keeping it in the family.
This is an example of a series ‘1.5’ E Type. You can tell by the open headlamps and the rectangular rocker switches on the dash.
It has the 4.2 liter inline six-cylinder engine. Bill is glad not to have the V-12. The special high-octane leaded fuel is expensive (around $8 per gallon). With the smaller engine, he doesn’t have to reduce the amount of driving enjoyment.
Bill is a good custodian of this historic car. He enjoys it as it is meant to be, driving it more and more each year. The more he drives it, the better it runs.
He is slowly and steadily restoring it. He has replaced the tires and exhaust. He has done engine and brake work. He recognizes how much work and expense lies ahead. Because there is a lot to restore, he is taking a methodical approach with a schedule that allows him to continue enjoying the car. During this process the car wears its history and character well.
